StumbleCol-Discography-Death Letter

by Col on December 6, 2011

Track 7 of “Smutbots Room” is “Death Letter” the Son House classic from the 1930`s. I have found that Son House him self recorded several different versions of this song, some with Slide, some with out, different verses, different lyrics. My version is an amalgamation of different parts, from his different versions. I have used some lyrics and not others and given it the StumbleCol treatment.

StumbleCol-Death Letter by Son House-On top of a mountain in Maerdy-South Wales.

Lyrics
Got a letter this morning,
written in red.
Said hurry-hurry,
the girl you love is dead.
Got a letter this morning,
written in red.
Said hurry-hurry,
the girl you love is dead.

I crammed up my bag,
and I got on down that road.
By the time I got there,
she was laying on a cooling board.
I crammed up my bag,
and I got on down that road.
By the time I got there,
she was laying on a cooling board.

I walked right up close,
looked down in her face.
Said this good ol` gal,
gonna lay here till Judgement Day.
I walked right up close,
looked down in her face.
Said this good ol` gal,
gonna lay here till Judgement Day.

I didn`t feel too bad,
until the Sun went down.
Now I don`t have soul,
to throw my arms around.
No, I didn`t feel too bad,
until the Sun went down.
Now I don`t have soul,
to throw my arms around.

Well you know that I cried all last night,
and all the night before.
I`m gonna change my ways,
so I don`t have to cry no more.
Well you know that I cried all last night,
and all the night before.
I`m gonna change my ways,
so I don`t have to cry no more.

Got a letter this morning,
written in red.
Said hurry-hurry,
the girl you love is dead.
Got a letter this morning,
written in red.
Said hurry-hurry-hurry,
the one you love is dead.
